The Selection Process

How is your child selected to represent the school at sporting events?

Here at West Byfleet Junior School, we hold sport in high regard, aiming to foster a love for physical activity, teamwork, and healthy competition amongst our students. We understand the importance of ensuring fairness and transparency in the selection process, especially when it comes to representing the school in/at various sporting events.

When considering students for participation in these events, we take several factors into account, which may include:

Performance in Physical Education (P.E.) Lessons:

Our Physical Education (P.E) classes serve as a foundation for students to develop fundamental skills and techniques across a range of sports. Participation, effort, and improvement in these classes are significant indicators of a student's readiness to represent the school in/at sporting events. Discussions with P.E coaches are paramount to the initial selection process as they observe the children within the sporting environment.

Previous Participation in Events:

Students who have previously represented the school in sporting events demonstrate experience, skill, and a commitment to the values of sportsmanship and teamwork. Their prior involvement is often taken into consideration when selecting participants for upcoming events.

Initial Interest and Enthusiasm:

We highly value the initial interest and enthusiasm shown by students who express a desire to represent the school in sporting events. This eagerness reflects a genuine passion for sports and a willingness to contribute positively to the school's sporting endeavours.

General and Learning Behaviour:

When selecting, we take into consideration not only their skill level but also their attitude, sportsmanship, ability to work collaboratively with others and their overall behaviour in and around school. It is important for us to create a safe and respectful environment for all students, both on and off the field. Additionally, the selection process is fair and unbiased, taking into account the overall well-being of the team and the positive experience for all participants. As stated above, behaviour both in and out of the classroom is taken into account and a discussion with class teachers is always held to ensure children deserve to represent the school.

It's important to note that while these factors play a role in the selection process, we strive to provide equal opportunities for all students to participate and excel in sports. We encourage students to actively engage in Physical Education classes, practice outside of school hours, and express their interest in representing the school, regardless of their prior experience or skill level.

Should your child express interest in representing the school at sporting events, we encourage them to participate wholeheartedly in Physical Education classes, practice regularly, and communicate their interest to their respective teachers or coaches.
