Since 2010, local schools have had the opportunity to take part in the Centrepiece project. Working with The Lightbox and Mayford DFAS, children from WBJS have had unique access to sculptures from The Ingram Collection of Modern and Contemporary British Art and used them as inspiration for their own art work. Each year a different sculpture is chosen from The Ingram Collection. Children from WBJS have visited The Lightbox and are able to view the sculpture up close and make an in-depth study of it. During their visits our pupils also look at a variety of art works and the different materials they are made from, explore the gallery and work collaboratively on various creative activities, inspired by the chosen sculpture. The ideas generated are then taken back to the classroom, where the students create their own original artworks. These works are then exhibited in The Art Fund Prize Gallery alongside the Centrepiece sculpture from The Ingram Collection. The Centrepiece sculpture for 2014 is ‘Margaret’ by Darrell Evanes and the ‘Centrepiece: Margaret’ exhibition will be on show from 18 July – 13 August 2014.
