The New Huangpu Experimental School. (NHPES)
The aim of my visit funded by the British Council was to form a partnership with a school in Shanghai, which would provide educational benefit for pupils and staff from both countries.
The following images are a taster of the teaching and learning experiences I was lucky enough to share at NHPES.
Over the next year we aim to give children experiences in penpal links, joint projects and the ultimate aim as with other successful projects undertaken is to participate in exchange visits for more staff and pupils.
A typical classroom
New Huangpu school is considered one of a few outstanding elementary schools in Shanghai. As such its classrooms are equipped with projector screens as well as the traditional blackboard.

Group work
Here in this English lesson, children are enjoying talking with each other in English and recording their conversations. Evidence of different assessment for learning strategies in place, which would have been unheard of a few years ago. New Huangpu has an excellent reputation for being a Bi Lingual school, where all lessons are taught in both Chinese and English.

I was struck by the high levels of self discipline demonstrated by the children.

Outstanding Behaviour
The children demonstrated outstanding behaviour and motivation towards all aspects of their learning.

Equally, the children were thoughtful, polite and showed great interest in their learning.

English lesson
At Huangpu, the teaching of English is seen with a strong emphasis on the spoken word before any writing of English takes place. I was very impressed with the levels of English of all the children, which obviously reflects a very effective approach to teaching a foreign language.

Classroom furniture
All the classrooms are equipped with desks arranged in rows facing the teacher. Storage of equipment is under the desks.

Chinese writing
During the Chinese part of lessons, the beautiful chinese calligraphy is used.

Morning exercise
Morning exercise happens each day and the children practice drills of exercise and Kung Fu.This last for about 10 -15 minutes and takes place to music.

Each day, different children are selected to demonstrate Kung Fu routines and lead the morning exercise. Again very impressive.

The Cooperation Ceremony
On March 25th 2010, I signed a cooperation agreement between ourselves and New Huangpu Experimental School i Shanghai. Members from the British Council, Ashcombe Secondary School from Dorking and leaders from the Educational bureau attended the signing ceremony.

We have agreed to: 1.Become partner schools 2.Work hard to achieve the highest level of cooperation 3.Establish a programme of exchange visits for teachers to share ideas to improve the quality of both schools provision 4.Establish greater understanding by the pupils of different cultures through visits and use of technology.

In comparison to schools in England, much less display of work by pupils is available. However, what is on display is of the highest quality and reflects a great deal of hard work.

Grounds
The school has a population of 1000 pupils, 500 in the primary section. It has a large all weather area outside for sport and morning exercise.
